How to bounce back when you’ve blown it

So… let’s say your in a funk.

Whether it’s one too many backyard BBQs, boxes of girl scout cookies or glasses of wine….you find yourself in a stretch of days where your in a downward spiral with unhealthy choices.

Recently, a mom asked me to address how to bounce back when you’ve really “blown it”.

In this video, I share not only my thoughts on these health ruts, but my top 3 strategies that I use every time I notice my momentum slipping and feel that “ick” of too many poor choices in a row.

Click on the video below to check out my personal 1-2-3 punch to get back on track pronto.

Here’s the “nutshell” summary:

A.  Expect to get off track. It’s part of life, and most especially part of a busy mom’s life.

B.  Have a personal plan for when you begin to notice your in a funk.  The sooner you catch yourself the better.

C.  My 3 part strategy is:

1.  Water, Water, Water and my daily supplements.

2. Clean, Green and Crisp Veggies as well as Brown Rice. (I go for cleansers, scrubbers, and grounding foods)

3.  Get out of my head, by getting into my body.  Through stretching, yoga, energy techniques or a good long walk in nature.

How well we keep up momentum for healthy, vibrant living is the degree to which we recognize when we are off track and work to redirect ourselves back to center.

That requires:

1.  Honest expectations about what getting “off track” means (it does NOT mean you are a failure, weak or that you suck).

2.  A way to check in with yourself regularly so you catch yourself when you are “a bit” off center and not “way out of orbit” off center.

3.  Have a simple, clear and doable plan that makes your body, mind and spirit feel clear, calm and nourished– pronto.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Please also share on Facebook, Twitter or with any other groups of moms you think would find it valuable!

  1. I think these tips are awesome. I love your site and read often (even though I am not yet a momma…hope to be soon). For me getting back on track means upping my water and REAL food intake, getting outside for a long walk and spending some quality time in quiet prayer. Thanks for a great video.

    1. Welcome Brittnie– LOVE that you know what you need to get back on track- it is so essential to have the steps that work for you and not simply what works for another person– fantastic!

  2. thanks for the great tips and ideas!

Oh My Gosh! You always hit right on the mark with me. LOVE these tips. I actually do “suck” (love that you used that word – it sounds a lot sweeter coming from you :)) at making rice so I’m getting a rice cooker today so I can forget-a-’bout it and get back on track quicker. One less excuse, one step closer to healthy, one less thing to be stressed about – that’s what it is all about right? 🙂 Thank you so much!! P.S. I ate 4 raspberry and chocolate turnovers last night before bed! Do you think your video was meant for me this a.m.?!

    1. Love it Jennifer- so excited you are going for the rice cooker- it makes getting whole grains in SO MUCH easier- you’ll see!!

  4. Jennifer, you made me LOL!

Lisa, I paused the video after point one, ran and refilled my water and grabbed my supplements (that I hadn’t take in over a week!), and then sipped it while I watched the rest! 🙂 This is what I love about your videos and emails: easy, immediately-doable suggestions and reminders, the help me stay on, or get back on track. I most especially loved what you said, about “practicing the art of getting back on track.” WOW! I never thought of it that way! Each time I veer off course is a chance to practice the art of getting back on track. Thanks for another great tip!!

    1. Spring- yay for getting right to the action- 2 points for you mama!

Lisa, this is fabulous! I have been looking for just this type of holistic healing advice! I am a mom, wife, massage therapist, doula, and yoga teacher….So nice to connect with others of like mind! Have a fantastic week! 🙂

    1. Ooooh another soul sista out there- so glad you are here, Natalie!

  6. Great reminder and perfect timing. As summer stretches on, going through each day without the structure I normally have throughout the rest of the year, starts taking its toll. I find myself starting to slip: bedtime gets later, more cold sweet treats, hotter weather which for me zaps me of energy so I start grabbing snacks yada yada. Maybe its time to review my Cleanse Your Life binder and get back on track.

    Thankful for you 🙂
P.S.I also love this email video format!

    1. Yup, yup- I totally get the summer slump. Seems wild when this is THE season for fresh fruits and veggie- we so often go into excess in the other direction 🙂

Glad you’re diggin the videos- I love making them!

  7. You wouldn’t believe how timely this is … aye aye! What a day! And I agree with Sharon – love this email video format. Keep up the fantastic work! And deepest thanks for providing so many of these resources for FREE. Very grateful for the work you’re doing. 🙂 Signing off to refill my water glass …

    1. Thanks Bren! xoxo Lisa

Looks like me and almost everyone else here is filling up the water glass! 🙂

The video was edited and I wonder if you mentioned specifically what supplements you recommend, Lisa. Are there ones you think everyone should take on a regular basis or does it just depend on the individual?

    1. Amanda– Grreeat question– I think I’ll do another video on the everyday supplements i take currently…

Here’s a link to a previous post where I name 4 excellent ones to consider starting with depending on where you are at and what is going on for you personally in your diet and health.

I now take Juice Plus instead of a multi vitamin, cod liver oil, probiotics (though I get these via my smoothie) and on days when my stress is getting a bit off kilter I add an adaptogen herb like ashwaghanda or holy basil.

  9. Thank you SOOO much! I am been finding myself slipping in to a funk and I let food help numb that and my exersize slips away, tomorrow I am going to work on hydration! These 3 steps are do-able, even foe a busy mama 🙂 What “supplements” do you use or recommend?
Thank you for the great info- Katie

    1. Hey Katie- I answered the supplement Q above 🙂

  10. Lisa, your site is new to me but reading this today I feel like this us the start for me. Especially now that I am trying to get back on track after a bank holiday weekend. Too much of everything wrong for me. So thank you, you make it feel like I can do it. Really enjoy the text and audiovisual format. Maisie

    1. Thanks for stopping by Maisie! Glad you enjoy the format 🙂

  11. I love that your approach is so realistic. Just saying phrases like “as moms our days are never predictable” is so helpful! So much fitness and health info is so rigid, even if they don’t mean it to be. Anything is rigid when it comes to trying to flex with the mom life. ha! 🙂 Thanks for helping us acknowledge we’re going to get off track. And for helping us see that knowing how to get back on track is really the goal. So very encouraging! Thank you!
